Frogspawn in February !!

While working in school this week we spotted, to our surprise, frogspawn in the school pond! We wouldn’t normally expect to see this for a few more weeks yet as this is more ordinarily observed from March onwards.

The children were very excited on seeing the frog spawn, and as the schools pond is a little shallow at the moment and the outside temperatures have been consistently below zero, we took the spawn and placed it in a fish tank using locally sourced river water and using plants to aid oxygenation of the water. We’d expect the spawn to start hatching soon into tadpoles which will be extremely fun for the children to observe as they start their metamorphose into frogs over the coming weeks. Watch this space for further updates.
